Pfc Roeder was a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department in Chicago's Chinatown before he was drafted in 1944.He was taken prisoner on 9 January 1945 and died as in POW camp Stalag 4B. His remains were never recovered.
At the time he was taken prisoner, his unit was engaged in the fighting in Hatten, France.
