More information
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For notorious service in support of combat operations against the enemy in Belgium from December 23, 1944 to January 4, 1945. Sgt Carroll, who was promoted to tank commander in the field, was fearless in the discharge of his duties under fire and through his calm attitude instilled confidence in his men. While his company was advancing into an enemy held town, he noticed that one of the tanks was in need of help. In the attempt to give the support needed he brought his tank forward in the face of intense artillery and mortar fire, and was killed when a mortar shell exploded directly over his head. Sgt Carroll's great courage and devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.Source of information: Peter Schouteten, Carla Mans, www.wwiimemorial.com, www.ancestry.com - Headstone and Interment Record / 1920 Census / U.S. WWII Draft Cards Young Men
