Pfc Carl A. Swanson was employed by the H. W. Gossard clothing factory before he enlisted in Marquette, Michigan on 11 September 1942.

He was married to Eleanor Racine on 22 November 1939.

On 26 July 1944 in France, he was reported wounded in action by small arms fire and shrapnel and was sent to England to recuperate. V-Mail and letters sent to his wife and parents show that he was back at the front in early December.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.

His niece and her husband were able to visit his gravesite in May 2025.
