Pfc Robert L. Mottern worked for Columbia Contruction in Redding, California before he enlisted in Sacramento, California on 23 January 1943.

3rd Platoon encountered a fire fight at the house, called Holdeurn, and after things quited down, they proceeded to their defensive positions in Berg en Dal. There they that had some harassing fire from the enemy during which Pfc Mottern was killed.
