S/Sgt Samuel E. Boyden graduated from Andover High School and attended Wilcox College of Commerce. He was employed at the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.He enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio on 28 November 1942.
S/Sgt Boyden's unit encountered a roadblock as they attempted to enter the town of Schirmeck. Being in the second tank he fired on the roadblock and blew it away. However, he had to dismount the tank to clear the barrel of the gun and was then killed by a sniper.
