More information
2nd Lt Dallas B. Hartwell attended college for two years before he joined the Army in Moscow, Idaho on 16 May 1942.He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously. The citation cited: "On 6 January 1945 when his platoon was caught by enemy fire without any cover Lt Hartwell remained in an exposed position in order to direct the remainder of his platoon to the cover of a wall of a nearby building and from this exposed position directed counter-fire against the enemy. While so doing, Lt Hartwell was wounded and removed to the vicinity of a railroad station but because of the presence of enemy artillery and infantry it became necessary for him to be left behind, and he has been missing in action."
