Sgt John A. Swenson graduated from Montevideo High School and attended college for four years. He was a chief clerk employed by the Chippewa Co. Agric Construction Assoc.

For his actions on 25 March 1944 in Italy, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

In January 1945 he was severely wounded in action by artillery shell fragments in the kidneys. He was evacuated to a hospital where he died of his wounds. The exact location where he died is not known.
