T/5 Harold T. Hitchens attended high school for three years and was a fireman before he enlisted at Fort Dix, New Jersey on 28 January 1942.Shortly before his battalion left the Bois de Moncourt, he suffered a fatal head injury from the explosion of an artillery shell which also claimed the life of Pfc George E. Nolan. The shell exploded without warning.
T/5 Hitchens was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
