Pfc Curtice L. Mathews Jr. graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942 before he enlisted in New York City, New York on 17 June 1943.

He was awarded the Soldier's Medal for heroism on April 3 1945. Per his Commanding Officer, "While riding in a truck as his outfit moved into position near Wurzburg, Private Mathews threw his body without hesitation upon a grenade which had become activate accidentally and absorbed the shock of the explosion so that not another man in the truck was injured."
