More information

Pfc Jamiel H. Mattar attended high school for four years before he enlisted in Little Rock, Arkansas on 11 September 1943.

Pfc Mattar was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his action on 15 March 1945. The citation cited: When the squad in which he was serving as a rifleman was held up by a strong enemy opposition, Pvt Mattar made his way forward to a position from which he could open effective fire on the enemy. Drawing the enemy fire on himself, he enabled the squad to maneuver around to the flank from where they destroyed the enemy emplacement. During this gallant action, he was mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage and aggressiveness, Pvt Mattar played a major role in the successful attack.
