T/Sgt James J. McHarg attended college for three years and was a mechanic employed by the Carnegee Illinois Steel Co.

He enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 13 March 1943.

From May 1944 to July 1944, he was hospitalized in Italy for wounds at his face and neck caused by artillery shell fragments. In September he was wounded again by artillery shell fragments and hospitalized until October.

T/Sgt McHarg was killed by small arms fire in the addomen.
