1st Lt Donald R. Tyler attended Western Washington college at Bellingham, Washington.

He joined the Regular Army in October 1938. After spending time in the Pacific Theatre, he reported to Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia where he received his commission as a second lieutenant on 12 June, 1942.

1st Lt Donald R. Tyler was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
