More information
Pfc Donald C. Mac Pherson was employed at the S And H Garage before he enlisted at Fort Myer, Virginia on 9 November 1943.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. When his unit had entered an area, subjected to heavy German artillery fire, the streets were being combed by machine and mortar fire and several casualties lay helplessly out in the street, unable to move from "no-mans land". To the rescue came Pfc Mac Pherson who was undercover in a nearby building. He crawled out under fire to one of the wounded and brought him to safety. On his way to the second casualty he was hit by shrapnel in the left hand and left eye. Despite the pain of his own wounds he brought the man in and made two more trips for the remaining casualties. Then he treated all four of the wounded and made them comfortable before going to the aid station for treatment of his injuries.
He died of his wounds in his spleen in a field hospital.
