Sgt Paul D. Sharpe graduated from East Nashville High School and was a postman for the U.S. Post Office before he enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 17 July 1941.

He had been awarded the Silver Star Medal for his part in the evacuation of wounded men from a battlefield in Normandy, France July 1944.
