The Joyal family immigrated to America in 1924, first settling in Rhode Island and later moving to Vermont. Pvt Joyal was known for his great sense of humor. He completed grammar school and found employment in various semiskilled occupations.

Pvt Adelard Joyal enlisted in Rutland, Vermont on 25 June 1942.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in St. Corneille, France.

His brother George E. Joyal is buried next to him.
