Marvin Bing formerly lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Bing. He attended West High School and was a caddy at the Byrnes Ppark golfcourse.

Pvt Marvin L. Bing joined the National Guard in Waterloo, Iowa on 10 February 1941. He served with his unit in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

In June 1943, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional bravery beyond the call of duty during the North African campaign when he, together with two other men charged and destroyed an enemy machine-gun nest after two other members of their party had been killed.

Pvt Bing was last seen going into a church to rest after an action in the vicinity of Cassino, Italy. Shortly after, a heavy artillery shell demolished the church.

His father, Willard Bing, was a member of the Army Signal Corps during World War I.
