More information
2nd Lt Richard J. Clarke attended Springhill College in Alabama and transferred to Western Kentucky College. He graduated from Western Kentucky in 1939.He was employed at Kentucky-Tennessee Power and Light Company.
He enlisted on 1 June 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was sent overseas 3 June 1944.
He was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously. The citation cited: Lt Clarke's battalion, having launched an attack together with an infantry battalion encountered considerable difficulty when several tanks became bogged down due to the soft and muddy fields. Disregarding the heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire, Clarke unhesitatingly left his own tank and worked tirelessly trying to get the tanks of his platoon out of the mud. He succeeded in getting four of the five vehicles free and placed the tanks in position at a roadblock to repel any possible enemy counterattacks.
