Pfc Tetzlaff enlisted and was inducted into the United States Army, 24 March 1942. His first training was at Camp Barkley, Texas, where he was enrolled in Company B, 358th Infantry Regiment. From there he was transferred to Shreveport, Louisiana. In April 1944 he was transferred to Fort Dix, New Jersey. From there he embarked for overseas duty. He landed in England in April 1944. On D-Day in June 1944 he took part in the invasion of Europe. Being wounded, he was hospitalized for two months; he returned again to combat duty 31 August 1944. On 10 February 1945 Pfc Tetzlaff was again wounded in action.
