More information

1st Lt John L. Berg graduated from Holmen High School in 1937 and La Crosse State Teachers College in 1941. He taught high school mathematics in What Cheer, Iowa.

He enlisted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 17 July 1942. After receiving his commission, he was a search-light instructor in the anti-aircraft artillery for more than a year.

Volunteering to lead a rescue party across two hundred yards of open terrain to a wounded man who lay exposed to direct enemy observation, Lt Berg worked his way under heavy fire through the snow to the man's side. Placing the wounded man on a litter, the party returned across the open field, successfully evacuating the man under continual enemy fire. For this action, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.

Later in the day Lt Berg was mortally wounded while leading his platoon in the defense of its position against a strong enemy attack.
