Pfc James E. Schwalbach attended high school for two years and was a salesman, employed by the New Jersey Tobacco Co.

He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 23 September 1943.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions against the enemy in the vicinity of Taulignan, France on 28 August 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the back and leg.
