T/4 Joseph E. Thomas and the entire crew was killed when his M-10 tank destroyer was knocked out by an 88mm shell.He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.
A monument near the town of Saulx de Vesoul, France bears his name.
