Cpl James B. Dunleavy attended high school for four years and was a shipping and receiving clerk before he enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 30 December 1942.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
