More information
S/Sgt Alden R. Littlefield attended high school for four years and was a sales clerk before he enlisted in Portland, Maine on 5 August 1943.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his action on the day of his death. The citation cited: During a fanatical enemy counterattack against his mortar position in Würzburg, Sgt. Littlefield observed German troops in a building across the street from his emplacement. Fearlessly exposing himself to withering small arms fire, he was wounded while making his way from man to man, checking his squad’s deployment against the oncoming attack. Continuing to expose himself, he was mortally wounded when he moved forward to direct his comrade’s fire against an enemy attack that threatened our positions in Würzburg.
