Sgt James A. Bower attended high school for four years and was an office boy.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 31 March 1942.

He was killed when the command post suffered a direct hit during an enemy barrage.

He was first buried in a temporary grave at Margraten on 9 March 1945. He was disinterred on 23 July 1948 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 29 July 1948. He was given his final resting place in February 1949.
