1st Lt James V. McDonough attended Edwardsville High School and worked in the machine shop of Ray Young in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania enlisted on 16 February 1942. He was sent overseas in January 1944.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his action in Italy on 23 May 1944.

He was wounded in action on 21 September 1944 and died of his wounds on 24 September 1944. The exact location where he died is not known.

He is remembered at a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.
