S/Sgt William Q. Howell graduated from du Pont Manual Training High School before he enlisted in Louisville, Kentucky on 5 February 1943. He was sent overseas in May 1944.

S/Sgt Howell, together with Pfc James V. Green, was killed when they drove their jeep on an anti-tank mine, which the Germans had laid a day before.

His brothers George and James served with the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy.
