Pfc Marion L. McIlwain attended high school for 3 years and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort McPherson Atlanta, Georgia on 26 June 1944.

Together with three comrades, Pfc McIlwain was in a jeep when they drove on an anti-tank mine that the Germans had placed on the road the day before.
