More information

Cpl Howard B. Jerred attended high school for four years and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on 27 July 1944 and sent overseas in January 1945.

He was aboard a troop train and came too close to high-tension wires that supplied current to the train and electricity jumped to his body. A friend and commanding officer, Lt. Howard Beck, quoted, “I saw a blinding flash and Howard falling.” A letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Jerred from Lt. Beck said, “He came-to just shortly after it happened and recognized me and talked to me. He wasn’t in any great pain but complained he was awfully hot. Cpl Jerred died in the 42nd Field Hospital just outside Salzburg, Austria.
