1st Lt Samuel M. Dykes graduated from the Tennessee Military Institute in Cooksville, Tennessee.
He joined the National Guard in September 1940 and trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Benning, Georgia.

Lt Dykes first served with the 30th Infantry Division until he was transferred to the 100th Infantry Division. He then volunteered for overseas duty and was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Division. He was sent overseas in September 1943.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions on 22 April 1944 in Anzio, Italy. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for his actions on 10 September 1944 in France.
