Pvt Sylvester P. Grates attended high school for three years and was a chauffeur.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Detroit, Michigan on 7 May 1942.

During 1944 he was wounded several times.

During crossed the river Rhine in the vicinity of Worms, Germany the boat with Capt–Chaplain Loren L. Stanton and several medics on board capsized.
