2nd Lt Paul L. Smith attended college and was a manager before he enlisted in Camp Dodge, Herrold, Iowa on 22 December 1942.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy on 2 September 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
