More information

Pvt Herman R. Fuller enlisted in Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 10 February 1942.

He wanted to join the U.S. Marines but was not accepted because of a broken nose. He was a good amateur boxer.

He attained the rank of sergeant, but he was later demoted for some incident while he was in England. Its not clear what happened, but it probably had something to do with his boxing skills.

He was involved in the fighting in North Africa, the invasion of Sicily and the Italian campaign.

Information says he died in the battle for the Waal bridge, giving aid to a wounded soldier and refused to leave him. An artillery shell killed him instantly.

Pvt Fuller was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands as Unknown X-8. Identification was established through laundry marks and initials and the number on a Geneva Conference Card.
