Pvt George M. Newman was the bookkeeper in the family lumber business before he enlisted in April 1944. He was sent overseas in December 1944.He was killed by enemy machine gun fire while on night patrol near the town of Holzwihr, France. For this action he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously.
On one photo he poses with his wife Mary in 1937. She would never remarry and came to visit his grave in 1980. Their daughter Mary Alice was born in December 1931.
