Sgt Lionel J. Nault graduated from Iron Mountain High School and was a musician in a WPA band.He was wounded in action in January 1945 by artillery shell fragments in his face.
Sgt Nault was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously for his actions on 28 January 1945 in France. The citation cited: With enemy machine gun & rifle fire from a road-block installation retarding their company's advance, Sgt. Nault & another soldier ran 50 yards through hostile fire to a point 20 yards from the enemy installation. There the 2 men with Bazooka fire & rifle grenades knocked out a German 75mm gun & forced the crew & other personnel on the road-block to flee. One German was killed trying to escape.
Sgt Nault was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax and arm.
