Pvt James D. Roberts worked on a farm before he enlisted on 21 April 1942.

He had his basic training at Camp Roberts, California, Fort Ord, California and Camp Picket in Virginia. On 16 October 1942 he was sent overseas.

In June 1944, he was wounded in Italy at his hand by artillery shell fragments. He was discharged from the hospital a month later.

Together with other soldiers and an officer he was killed by artillery shell fragments in the thorax while they were evacuating wounded and killed soldiers from the battlefield.

He is remembered at a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.
