1st Sgt John L. King was employed by the L. and A. Railway. He was also an organist for the First Baptist Church of Greenwood and an active member of the Masonic Lodge.He voluntarily joined the Regular Army in Jackson, Mississippi on 12 September 1940. He was first assigned to the Company G, 41st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division at Fort Benning. However, he spent most of his first years in the army with Company G, 36th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Division at Camp Polk, Oregon. In 1941 he also attended the Armed Force Officer Candidate School in Forst Knox.
