Pfc Hughes J. Conard graduated from Holden High School and was employed by the Vendo Company.

He enlisted on 15 March 1943 and was sent overseas in August 1944. He joined his unit from the 38th Replacement Battalion on 24 September 1944.

The mission that day was to cross the Blies River and establish a bridgehead. His boat struck a piling and capsized.
