Pfc Dale H. Smith was a filling station attendant before he enlisted at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on 29 April 1944.

He died when his boat capsized in an attempted crossing of the Blies River near Zweibrücken, Germany.

He was officially declared dead one year and one day after he was reported missing in action.
