Sgt Henry J. Gendron attended high school for three years and was a semiskilled route man before he enlisted in Providence, Rhode Island on 4 November 1942.
He was taken prisoner of war and died of his injuries in Germany.
He has been awarded the Silver Star for his part in saving the lives of tank crew men trapped in their burning tanks. According to the citation accompanying the award he was on special mission when the plight of the tank crew members was discovered. At risk of his own life he aided in removing the men from the tanks and gave treatment until medical aid could be secured.
