More information
Sgt Ronald F. Sheller attended high school for four years and was employed at the Douglas Aircraft Company before he enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 29 December 1943.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal. The citation reads: On 19 December 1944 in the vicinity of Longvilly, Belgium, he was accompanying a group of tank men and infantry men who were attempting to gain entrance to the town. The town was partially in the hands of the enemy and the group was pinned down by enemy artillery and small arms fire. Pvt Sheller, in an attempt to knock out the enemy gun which was harassing his comrades and preventing their progress, killed an enemy sniper and crawled to a point where he could observe an enemy machine gun emplacement. Advancing under enemy fire, he wiped out the enemy gun single-handed killing two members of the crew and taking the third prisoner.
Sgt Sheller was later killed by artillery shell fragments.
