Sgt Josiah T. Hess attended the Huntington Mills High School for four years and worked on a farm before he enlisted in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 24 April 1941. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France,

He is remembered at the Dodson Cemetery in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
