1st Sgt James E. Sargent attended high school for four years before he enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 3 November 1942.
He was killed by a land mine that blew up the vehicle he was in.

He is remembered at Locust Grove Cemetery in Merrimac, Essex County, Massachusetts with a memorial marker.
