Sgt Lewis Pessin graduated from Weaver High School where he was a soloist in the A Capella Choir. He was attending Bard College when he volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Hartford, Connecticut on 12 November 1942. After nine months in the Army Specialized Training Program at Yale and Boston University, he was transferred to the infantry and was sent overseas in October 1944.

His cousin Harold L. Pessin was killed on 16 January 1945 in France and is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France.
