Pfc Robert E. Barthel graduated from Green Township High School in 1943 and was employed by the Mastic Asphalt Corporation.

He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 28 March 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

At the time of his death, his stepbrother Don was serving in France.
