Salem Soldier killed in action in Germany - Pvt Frederick Edward Collins, 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Augustine Collins of Salem, previously reported missing in action as of Jan. 31, is now reported killed in action in Germany on the day previous in a telegram to his parents from the War Department.
The young man was a graduate of Salem Washington Academy in 1943 and was active in basketball and foorball during his four years there. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, the village Rod and Gun Club, Salem Union Grange and the Union Engine and Horse Company.
Pvt Frederick E. Collins enlisted in Albany, New York on 9 August 1944 and was home for the Christmas holidays going overseas shortly after that with the 90 Infantry Division of the Third Army.
He was first buried at Temporary American Military Cemetery Foy in Belgium, Block F, Row 9, Grave 201.
