2nd Lt Walker W. Gardiner graduated from Florence High School in 1938 and Clemson College in June 1943. He served in the Reserved Officers Cadet Training (R.O.T.C.) program where he was Cadet Colonel and Brigade Commander.He enlisted in Fort Jackson Columbia, South Carolina on 4 August 1943.
He was wounded on 7 July 1944 and returned to duty 29 December 1944. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
