Pfc Omer A. Buchanan worked on the family farm before he enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 3 February 1943.

He was officially declared dead one year and one day after he was reported missing in action. At that time his unit was fighting in the vicinity of Reipertswiller, Germany.

He is remembered at the Holly Springs Cemetery in Swain County, North Carolina.
