Pfc Fred Mitchell enlisted in Fort Hayes, Columbus Ohio on 17 August 1944.

He graduated from Harlem High School in 1941 and was an automobile serviceman before he enlisted. He went overseas in January 1945. His unit was the first to spearhead the Rhine Crossing.

On 19 April 1945 Fred captured a German officer in Dortmund, Germany, and took the officer's pistol. Two days later the gun discharged while Fred was cleaning it and killed Fred.
