S/Sgt Durward P. Carney attended high school for two years and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort McPherson, Georgia on 13 August 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
