Pvt Robert D. Putt attended Inola High School and was employed by Capital Motors before he enlisted in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania on 5 April 1944. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments on his shoulder.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.

Two of his brothers also served: John in the U.S. Navy and Frank with the Army in France.
